Horn of Africa Services (HOAS) is a nonprofit organization serving East African immigrant and refugee communities through culturally responsive programs, advocacy, and community engagement. We are seeking a qualified Grant Writer & Fundraising Specialist to support our development efforts and strengthen our organizational sustainability.

Position Summary

The Grant Writer & Fundraising Specialist is responsible for identifying funding opportunities, preparing high-quality grant proposals, and supporting fundraising initiatives. This role works closely with program staff and leadership to advance HOAS’s mission and secure essential resources.

Employment Type

This is a contract-based position.

If the selected candidate performs well and meets organizational expectations, the role may transition into a full-time position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Grant Writing

  • Research and identify grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government agencies
  • Develop, write, and submit compelling grant proposals and letters of inquiry
  • Prepare required attachments, budgets, and supporting documents
  • Maintain a grants calendar, track deadlines, and manage submissions
  • Assist with grant reporting and compliance requirements
  • Collaborate with staff to gather program data, outcomes, and narratives

Fundraising & Development

  • Minimum BA or BS degree
  • Support the planning and implementation of annual fundraising strategies
  • Assist with donor outreach, stewardship, and communications
  • Contribute to fundraising campaigns, events, and appeals
  • Maintain donor records and track contributions
  • Identify new funding opportunities and potential partnerships

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing, preferably in a nonprofit environment
  • Experience or strong interest in fundraising and donor engagement
  • Excellent writing, editing, and research skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently
  • Familiarity with immigrant and refugee communities is preferred

Compensation & Schedule

  • 24 hours per week
  • $32 per hour
  • Flexible scheduling within standard business hours
  • The selected candidate must be able to begin work within two weeks of accepting the position
