Director of Development for College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction

Nature of work : The Director Development, under the direction of an Associate Vice President or Dean, provides leadership and guidance for a university department. Typical Responsibilities: Responsible for development activities, including marketing and fiscal/budget management. Identify, cultivate, solicit and provide stewardship of major donors for academic and non-academic departments. Design and implement departmental strategies and objectives to ensure departmental goals are met. Develop and/or supervise the implementation of programs, policies & procedures and technology initiatives. Serve in an advisory capacity, providing coaching and consultation. Develop proposals, recommendations and reports for senior leadership. Collaborate with senior leaders to integrate departmental objectives that impact the university. During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job related duties at a designated off campus location or place of residence.

Required Qualifications: This position requires either (a) Bachelor's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and three years of experience directly related to the job functions; (b) or 7 years of direct experience.

General Description / Primary Purpose:

The Director Development is responsible for all development and fundraising activities in the College.

Job Function:

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and provide stewardship of major donors for College initiatives at the level of 100,000 or more.
  • Work and maintain a portfolio of 80 or more prospects/donors.
  • Provide staff support to the Colleges Advisory Councils
  • Work with the Dean, faculty and staff of the College to identify areas for which external support for the College and its programs is appropriate and necessary.
  • Work with the Dean, faculty and staff of the College in developing strategies and materials for attracting external support for the College at all monetary levels.
  • Nurture long-term relationships on behalf of the College with contributors including individuals, corporations and foundations for fundraising purposes.
  • Work with the Dean, AVP for Development and the Director of Planned Giving to seek, on behalf of the College, bequests, trusts and other forms of estate gifts.
  • Work with the Annual Giving department to coordinate College participation in direct mail, phonathon, and faculty and staff fund drives.
  • Attend Development and Alumni Engagement team meetings.
  • Prepare an annual calendar of College public events to serve as both public relations and fundraising tools for the College advancement program.
  • Develop an annual report of college development activities and accomplishments.
  • Assist College Alumni Constituent chapters to ensure that they build firm foundations for future relationships through reports from graduates and former students of the College.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean, or AVP for Development in consultation with the Dean, as they relate to a comprehensive, university-wide campaign.

During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job-related duties at a designated off campus location or place of residence.

Marginal Functions:
May represent the university on local, system-wide or state committees.

Departmental Requirements:

Preference shown to applicants who meet the required qualifications and also possess the following: Experience in fundraising within a higher education setting is preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail, particularly with regard to content, grammar, formatting and appearance of donor proposals and correspondence. Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills. High degree of initiative and a self-starter. Proven ability to build strong relationships with constituents including donors, prospective donors, corporate leaders, faculty, staff and the public in general. Proven ability to effectively utilize computer application technology, particularly word processors, internet, and electronic mail.

Supervision Received:

The Director of Development will report to both the Dean of the college and the Assoc. VP of University Development. The Dean will provide direction and leadership for the fundraising, alumni and public relations priorities to be addressed by the Director of Development. The AVP will work with the Director of Development to fulfill the goals and objectives to raise private support for the college, develop a strong base of alumni and friends of the college, incorporate efforts on behalf of the college with the overall university advancement effort and project the college and university in a positive manner to all publics.

Level of Public Contact:

High visibility internally and externally. Meets frequently with industry groups, friends of the college, alumni groups and other constituent groups as appropriate. Director is expected to spend a significant number of work hours out of the office. Travel with the Dean is first and foremost. Travel with the President, Provost, Vice Presidents and faculty/staff for development purposes related to the college will occur periodically.

Monetary Responsibility:

Responsible for projecting a yearly budget for program area. Error leads to poor program results. Tracks all donations and pledges to the college. Error could result in overspending.

Policy-making and/or Interpretation:

Interprets policies and procedures pertaining to fundraising, media/publications, alumni, marketing, special events, advisory boards, and other activities designed for the college and Development and Alumni Engagement.

Program Direction and Development:

Responsible for developing a program to:- Identify prospective donors primarily for the college and secondarily for the university.- Facilitate screening, analysis, compilation, and distribution of information regarding potential funding sources for the college.
