Development Officer

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Development Officer is the chief fundraising strategist for St. Andrew United Methodist Church, working with the pastoral staff to provide vision, leadership, direction, and coordination for all stewardship and fundraising efforts and initiatives. These include annual operating campaigns, capital campaigns, special fundraising appeals, and coordinated efforts for securing major gifts and testamentary gifts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Stewardship Education: As a staff liaison to the Stewardship Committee, work closely with the Pastors, Stewardship Committee and key laity and staff to develop and implement an annual strategic vision for stewardship education to raise the giving levels of all donors. Additionally, developing and evangelizing a unified narrative for fundraising for St. Andrew in support of the Senior Pastor.
• Comprehensive strategic vision for annual stewardship and capital campaigns: Work closely with Pastors, key staff, and appropriate committees to design and implement church-wide operating campaigns (once per year) and capital campaigns (as needed).
• Permanent Endowment Fund: work closely with Legacy Board to manage/cultivate current and future legacy benefactors through one-on-one visits and special events and establish system of communication and appreciation on a regular basis
• Cultivating and Managing Relationships with Laity: Research prospects and establish priorities for solicitation; develop deep relationships with members and constituents of St. Andrew to inform and inspire current and potential contributors. Candidate must have the ability to form and lead integrated teams with clergy, staff, and laity to execute strategy and campaigns.
• Collaboration with Sr. Pastor and Executive Pastor: Establish fundraising goals, communication needs, and project timelines for campaigns; establish a fundraising calendar that integrates with the master church calendar; connect pastors with potential donors.
• Administration: Track, analyze, and report data on all of St. Andrew’s fundraising efforts, donors, and prospects; manage and oversee the use of fund-raising software; regularly perform needs/trend analysis and make projections for future giving; ensure complete security and confidentiality of all donor information.
• Leadership Development: Recruit, train, manage, supervise and acknowledge volunteers who assist with fundraising projects and campaigns.
• Develop on-line fundraising strategies and plans to reach online community.
• Commitment to practice AFP ethical and professional standards
• Ability to attend off-site meetings as needed

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Eight to twelve years of demonstrated development experience, with a record of success in fundraising including the demonstrated ability to create fundraising plans, set and meet goals, and solicit and close major gifts from individuals.
• Proven track record of leading fundraising campaigns.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

• High level of technical proficiency with all common professional tools such as Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Excel, and Outlook. Proficiency with use of social media and experience with fundraising database software is a plus as is a working knowledge of internal and external communication technology and a willingness to learn new software
• Ability to manage complex organizational detail
• Ability to work independently and be flexible in a changing environment
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated management skills, preferably in a church or non-profit organization
• Ability to work with people of faith and with people at all economic levels
• Ability to work on a team
• Knowledge of AFP ethical and professional standards
• Knowledge of the United Methodist Church and familiarity with a progressive faith community is preferred
• CFRE certification preferred
