SHE LEADS JUSTICE: Development Director

We are She Leads Justice, an antiracist, intersectional feminist nonprofit in Connecticut. We use our
institutional power to serve and center women and communities most impacted by systemic
injustice and oppression. Using a justice and equity lens, we work to close the civil legal justice
gap, advocate for policy that improves economic security, and organize for statewide systemic change.
Position Overview
The Development Director is responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating fundraising efforts
at She Leads Justice (SLJ) including annual giving, major gifts, corporate sponsorship, grant writing, and fundraising events. The Development Director participates in the organization’s fiscal planning and identifies diverse funding sources and opportunities that embrace SLJ’s goals and cultivates and maintains relationships with individuals and funders. This position reports to the Executive Director.
Essential Responsibilities Include:
- Individual Giving: Lead SLJ’s individual donor solicitations and stewardship through
direct mail, email appeals, and other methods to cultivate small gift donors; manage
stewardship of individual donors including new donor welcome packets, timely thank you
messages, and identification of engagement activities; expand SLJ’s monthly sustainer
and planned giving program.
- Development Operations: Maintain donor information, such as accurate record of
donor interactions; process online/offline donations; manage SLJ online giving platform;
create fundraising reports for organization leadership.
- Major Donor Program: Support cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major
donors by assisting the Executive Director, including following up on information
requests, arranging one-on-one meetings, recording donor interactions, and helping to
identify engagement activities for donors.
- Events: Support SLJ fundraising (virtual and in-person) events, including assisting with
logistics and production tasks for events, producing event communications and
collateral, and tracking event RSVPs; in coordination with Executive Director and Board
Members, identify and solicit event sponsors. Recruit, train, and support key volunteers
to assist in advancement efforts.
- Institutional Funding: Manage foundation, government, and corporate partners;
manage grant calendar for new and renewal applications; conduct research on
institutional prospects; work with staff to thoughtfully describe SLJ’s programmatic goals
and plans, identify opportunities to expand and elevate SLJ’s work and role as a
statewide leader for women’s economic security; work with staff on submission of
proposals and reports.
- Communications: Coordinate with organization leadership on the overall
vision and strategy for donor communications, such as social media posts, donor emails
and newsletters, website, and annual reports to increase donor revenue and loyalty.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience with nonprofit fund development strategies and a track record of success in donor cultivation and stewardship, especially major donors
- Experience with donor database management
- Experience and success with grant writing, research and reporting
- Know how to turn knowledge into exciting and useful messages and distribute them to the right audiences
- Can lead volunteers, staff and board members with energy and vision
- Collaborating with diverse teams excites you, and you can manage multiple initiatives at once
- Know how to make timely, effective, and ethical decisions
- Confidence with the Microsoft Office suite, email marketing, and social media networks
Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time position. The salary range is $65,000 to $70,000 and comes with a benefits
package that includes generous paid time off, medical, and dental insurance, retirement
contributions. Please note this is a remote position. SLJ does not have a physical office.
