Reporting to and partnering with the Director of Development (DOD), the Assistant Director of Development (ADOD) will lead a comprehensive annual giving program to advance the mission of Carolina Performing Arts. CPA’s annual giving program raises $850,000+ per year and this revenue supports general operations, student access, global artistic excellence, and community engagement. This position will create a strategic and comprehensive development plan for annual giving each fiscal year; secure private funding from prospects and donors at the leadership annual giving level of $2K and up; lead development and integration strategies of direct marketing campaigns that result in achieving annual giving goals; create, implement, and assess donor segmentation and development marketing strategies; and utilize data and reporting to strategically enhance fundraising marketing efforts. They will also manage an active pipeline of qualified prospects and donors as well as assist in staffing and supporting the International Advisory Board and 1 to 2 committees. The ADOD will plan and execute fundraising and stewardship events, particularly as they relate to annual gift prospects and donors, in addition to engaging donors, volunteers, faculty, and UNC administrators at performances, board meetings, and other donor events when appropriate. 

This role will partner with the DOD in building and sustaining internal relationships across CPA. They will be expected to collaborate with colleagues to advance the philanthropic goals of the organization, promote best practices for fiscal sustainability and reporting, ideate on funding opportunities that meet donors’ needs and institutional goals, and communicate the critical need for philanthropic support through impact storytelling. The ADOD will foster collaborative pan-university development efforts with UNC’s University Development Office (UDO), Carolina Annual Giving Office, and other units and partners across UNC. As a member of the University’s OneCarolina development organization, the ADOD will set and meet personal fundraising goals consistent with best practices at UNC, represent UNC and partner with development colleagues in a collaborative and coordinated fashion, and maintain their prospect activity in the UDO Davie constituent relationship management database. Education:  Bachelor’s degree required. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in annual giving, project management, volunteer and events management, or a closely related field is required. Four (4) or more years of directly related experience is strongly preferred. 
  • Successful track record in annual fundraising in higher education or the arts is preferred. 
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with the ability to make a compelling case for philanthropic support to CPA, aligning donors’ interests with organizational priorities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 suite required. Experience with donor CRMs (Blackbaud), project management tools (Asana), and/or Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop) is preferred. 
  • Experience in designing and implementing direct mail marketing within a large company, organization, higher education, or nonprofit strongly preferred.
  • Ability to interact effectively in comprehensive environment such as a research university setting with donors, faculty, staff and volunteers. 
  • Exhibits the highest standards of professionalism and performance as evidenced by integrity, initiative, collaborative teamwork, critical thinking, accuracy, consistency, timeliness, and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively while demonstrating excellent organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and sound judgement.

  • Proven ability to connect one’s own work and goals to the broader mission and values of an organization.
  • High energy and passion for CPA’s mission is essential.
