Director of Development & Engagement, Foundation for Physical Therapy Research

Department: FPTR
FLSA Status: Exempt

The Director of Development & Engagement will provide results-oriented leadership for Foundation for Physical Therapy Research (FPTR).  This role promotes stewardship of donors, stakeholders and builds strategic communications amongst staff. The Director works collaboratively with the Communications Manager in developing strategies and priorities that advance the organization’s strategic plan resulting in significant revenue growth and greater awareness of the organization.  Directly manages a portfolio of major donors and planned giving prospects. Serves as the senior leader in the organization, reports to the CEO. Supervises staff.

The Foundation for Physical Therapy Research (FPTR) is an affiliate of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).  All staff of the FPTR are employed by APTA and adhere to all APTA policies and procedures.

Principal Functions

This position:

  • Develops strategies and priorities for development, collaborating with marketing & communications team to achieve organizational goals.
  • Oversees the strategy and priority implementation.
  • Identifies, builds relationships, and makes major and planned giving asks; Skilled at soliciting and closing major gifts.
  • Leads donor stewardship and engagement by deepening individual and organizational relationships
  • Responsible for implementing and evaluating individual and team metrics on an ongoing basis to ensure that goals are being met and professional growth is fostered.
  • Creates progress reports and communicates accomplishments to the CEO and Trustees; Works with and engages trustees and volunteers to assist with fundraising efforts.
  • Collaborates with APTA staff to promote effective, responsive, and relevant communications for members and external audiences related to FPTR funded and/or FPTR alumni physical therapy research.
  • Leads the development of annual fundraising plan to meet or exceed financial goals.
  • Oversees and completes tasks identified in the workplan.
  • Helps lead the planned giving activities of the FPTR
  • Provides recommendations on advancing operations within the FPTR to gain efficiencies, grow revenue and provides stewardship of FPTR resources
  • Contributes to quality assurance and continuous quality/performance improvement in the FPTRs activities, including supporting unit leader in annual assessments of respective budget activities described above
  • Is a member of the Association’s Business Affairs team and strives for shared success to support research to advance the physical therapy profession.
  • Works effectively with and manages implementation of appointed and volunteer committee efforts
  • Provides strategic insight, counsel, data and intelligence to unit leader and executive leadership as appropriate on best practices related to the work of Foundation for Physical Therapy Research through briefings, updates, reports and presentation



  • Bachelor's Degree, Required
  • CFRE or comparable certification
  • 7 years' progressively responsible philanthropy experience
  • Healthcare or research funding experience preferred
  • Marketing and communication experience related to fundraising
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Raiser's Edge or other nonprofit database experience; knowledge of prospecting tools and report.
  • Major or capital campaign experience a plus
  • Staff supervision experience

Physical Demands

  • Travel 20%; Nationally
