The Senior Director of Development works with the Foundation’s development team with the special responsibilities for planning and implementing a program to identify, cultivate and solicit donors with the ability to make major gifts, annual gifts, capital project gifts, program support gifts, grants and planned gifts directed to the mission of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines and Blank Children’s Hospital. The Senior Director of Development should have a proven track record in securing major gifts and charitable planned giving and have shown significant growth in these areas at his/her former employers. The Senior Director of Development reports to the President of UnityPoint Health – Des Moines Foundation. 

Key accountabilities:

  • Lead the development team at Blank Children’s to develop, structure and implement a comprehensive annual and multi-year development plan and vision for Blank Children’s.
  • Plan and implement major gift solicitation program using staff and volunteers where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Director of Grants on grant opportunities in support of programs, projects and services at Blank Children’s. Organize a cultivation program of major donors using a variety of methods including personal visits, involving other staff, administration, Board members and volunteers.
  • Identify prospective planned giving donors within the major gift prospects and work cooperatively with the Senior Director of Planned Giving in cultivating and securing planned gifts.
  • Coordinate with Blank Children’s leadership team on the oversight and distribution of Foundation funds.
  • Partner with community organizations on their fundraising efforts to support Blank Children’s (third party fundraisers).
  • Lead the Festival of Trees & Lights planning team, Blank Children’s largest annual fundraising event.
  • Participate as a full member of the Foundation’s leadership team in planning, organizing and coordinating annual fundraising activities and events of the Foundation such as A Night of Blue & White, Hops for Hospice and Rally Against Cancer.


  • Ten years of experience in a related area of charitable philanthropic work (including major gifts experience).
  • Experience in management of staff; currently has one staff member, the Director of Development for Blank Children’s, with plans for additional staff in the future if fundraising at Blank Children’s grows as expected.
  • Experience in developing and successfully implementing three-five year development plans for non-profit organizations, including the building of endowment funds as part of those plans.
  • Advanced understanding, appreciation and support for charitable causes.
  • History of voluntary support of charitable organizations.
  • Appreciation of the charitable mission of today’s hospitals and health care.
  • Ability to plan, budget, implement, and evaluate programs.
  • Appreciation for traditions and heritage of Blank Children’s and UnityPoint Health – Des Moines.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills including experience with e-mail, word processing, and fundraising software.
  • Experience in organizing, recording and retrieving important data and facts, including web based sources.
  • Basic understanding of, or interest in, laws and regulations regarding charitable giving.
  • Ability to function as a recognized leader within a diverse team of individuals at the Foundation and UnityPoint Health – Des Moines.
  • Proven track record of interacting with and securing major gifts from individual donors.
  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
